American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer
by Kai Bird, Martin J. Sherwin
Fascinating and deeply disturbing window on American society through the mid 20th Century. Oppie is not an entirely sympathetic character although he fares better than the American Right. In addition to the man and the physics, this book covers anti-semitisim, the McCarthy witch hunts and the tragedy of a global social revolution by which Oppie and many of his contemporaries were at first enticed and then betrayed. Should he have lost his security clearance? Probably, yes. Should the USA have twice nuked a country that was already totally defeated and looking for an honourable surrender – no.
